Playground safety surfacing is an integral part of every playground. The safety of children at play should always be priority number one when playgrounds are being designed and built. Rubber tiles and poured in place rubber surfacing are only two of several different types of safety surfacing available in the playground and recreational space today. They are both similar in price and they both offer unique features and benefits.
Rubber Designs offers two options when it comes to our interlocking rubber tiles; EPDM top tiles and Standard Buffing top tiles. Our EPDM top tiles are made with Gezolan brand Gezoflez EPDM granules while our Standard buffing top tiles are made with shredded and pigmented rubber buffings that we color in-house.
Both tile options are equipped with a patented alignment foot for ease of installation. Although our tiles interlock, we recommend gluing them down during installation. The certified fall height requirement of each playground dictates which tile thickness should be used for the install. Rubber Designs currently offers four different tile sizes that offer fall height protection between 4 and 10 feet.
We recommend installing our interlocking rubber tiles over concrete or other solid sub surfaces like asphalt. If tiles are installed over an uneven surface like crushed aggregate or grass, the tiles will be uneven as well. This should be avoided for safety and warranty purposes.
Our rubber tiles come in a variety of different colors but are limited when it comes to custom playground-wide designs. Maintaining tiles is rather simple when compared to other playground safety surfacing options. Another benefit is that if a tile is damaged, that individual tile can be replaced instead of surrounding tiles being having to be replaced as well.
Rubber Designs offers two main options when it comes to pour in place surfacing; Bonded Rubber Mulch and Gezolan brand Gezoflex EPDM. Poured in place rubber safety surfacing is offered in a wide range of colors and, when using EPDM granules, offers nearly unlimited playground-wide design potential. This type of surfacing in more laborious than rubber tiles when it comes to installation due to there being more steps in the application process. During installation, a layer of shredded rubber buffings in mixed with binder to serve as a cushioning agent. Once the cushioning layer is complete, an EPDM or rubber mulch layer is mixed with binder and then rolled or trolled on top We recommend installing poured in place rubber surfacing over crushed aggregate or concrete.
